of the Roosevelt Public School district is to educate and inspire all students to excel academically*, to become independent and creative thinkers, skillful communicators and lifelong learners. Roosevelt Public School nurtures and challenges the unique potential of each student so that our children will develop individual, social and civic responsibility as well as respect for themselves, each other, and the environment.

Roosevelt Public School (RPS), a pre-kindergarten through fifth-grade school, remains the only federally designated rural district in Monmouth County. With an average class size of 12, our staff is able to create a closely-knit learning community where we focus on developing the whole child.
Our success at RPS is the result of a kind, dedicated and talented teaching staff that is committed to creating engaging and meaningful learning experiences for each child. Whether it's allowing the children to turn into archaeologists as they dig for fossils and inspect them under microscopes, or challenging them to share a poem publicly with all of their peers supporting them, our teaching staff constantly seeks new opportunities to challenge themselves and each other to instill a love of learning and a sense of wonder in our students.

At Roosevelt, we recognize that learning happens through a variety of activities both inside and outside the traditional settings. Last year, Roosevelt was selected from a pool of 700 applicants to receive support in building a community garden that allows our students to learn, with the help of others, about how to create a sustainable and diverse environment. We have an expansive playground where it's not too unusual for our students to be running across our soccer field and see a host of monarch butterflies passing by. We also create numerous opportunities for our older students develop their teaching and empathy skills by working, and playing, with the younger children.
In 2008, The NJ Arts Education Census Project ranked RPS in the top 10 percent in the state for arts education, another example of our commitment to nurturing the creative spirit that pervades our community. We also offer a variety of after-school art and theater programs, including a visual arts program that is free of charge and open to all students in grades one through six.

It is no accident that the story of the town of Roosevelt is told most vividly through the stunning Ben Shahn mural that spans the length of Roosevelt Public School's lobby. Like the school, the town was built on a vision and a mission. Founded in the 1930s, Roosevelt had its beginnings as a New Deal cooperative town that could provide a better life for struggling garment workers in the city. The people who moved here - including the many artists who have been drawn to this unique place and its beautiful natural setting - knew that the only way to make a difference was to work together. While much has changed over the years, Roosevelt's thriving community spirit still remains.
